AMAZIGA G’ ENTE

WHY THE DEATH OF A DIGNITARY SHOULD BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE TO THE PEASANTS

The ‘Baganda’ are Uganda’s most civilised ethnic group, ranking in the top two. They have several proverbs, one of which is: AMAZIGA G’ ENTE LYE SANYU LYA MALEMBO, which translates as “The tears of a dying cow are the delight of the dogs nearby.

Uganda has lost two of its leaders to death: the Governor and now the Speaker of Parliament, and my focus is on the money for the burial ceremonies.

I have no objections to the government spending over 2 billion Shillings on a burial ceremony for a government dignitary, my only objection is: WHO ARE THE SERVICE PROVIDERS?, and how can we (as the government) ensure that MALEMBO (dogs, peasants) improve their standard of living?

Celebrate Them

The burial of these people should be designed in such a way that the peasants can profit from it. The loss of such people should give rise to a hospital, a school, a SACCO, 100 scholarships for students in that area…to a project in the late’s hometown.

We should not only grieve these folks but also celebrate them.

As a nation, we must be strategic in order to turn this negativity into a positive.

Domestic Dogs not Wild Vultures

It’s sad that such a person dies and the rich service providers get richer as the Malembo merely come to line up for a plate of food.

In Matthew 24:28, Jesus remarked, “Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures gather.” It is selfish for the privileged to profit financially from the death of their kind when the peasants, the Malembo, are not even allowed to scavenge.

A Death that Blessed the World

In Christianity, we celebrate our God’s death and resurrection because his death was a blessing to both the poor and the so-called rich. The death of an important person should be a blessing for the impoverished domestic dogs rather than a consumerist gathering for the vultures.

If you can’t bless the poor and the weak in life, at least let us (the poor and the weak) scavenge your corpse. I implore all the wealthy and powerful people reading this to write a Will that includes the Malembo of their town.

We need to appreciate you even after you’re gone.
