DEAR ELECTORAL COMMISSION AND UGANDA’S CONSTITUTION

Am concerned with a few questions about the PRESIDENCY of Uganda and your approval of candidates to the same.

  1. What has senior 6 got to do with the presidency? What is taught in senior 6 that contributes to the ability of someone in becoming the head of state. If it is orality (English proficiency), do I need senior 6 to speak any language? Isn’t it time we reviewed this section in our constitution. There are good leaders without senior 6 and good ones with senior 6, should we then look at S6 or have other sieving means? When we talk of academic papers and use S6 to send a legislator to the parliament where issues beyond S6 but of national importance are discussed should we be surprised if only 10 out of 500MPs are debating and others waiting to raise their hands or throw tantrums and parliamentary objects towards each other. Why do we have majority MPs eloquent outside the parliament and mute on the floor. President Amin was a good president but if America got rid of Trump is Uganda worth a senior 6 president and university chancellor in the Era of these PhDs?

2. What about 20M shillings that a presidential candidate is supposed to pay? Am not asking you for an audit report and how faithfully you spend the amount, all am asking is, if you asking for 20M aren’t you implicitly asking for an individual’s financial capacity? If it is, why do Embassies ask for bank statements before we go abroad for study, banks investigate our accounts before they grant us a loan…how come you approve candidates who cannot even follow their calendar and be in the districts they are supposed to be due to financial constraints? Where in the first place did such an individual get the 20M from? Shouldn’t the anti-corruption unit investigate this person? Isn’t the financial statement of every candidate important before we approve any? How can we have a PRESIDENTIAL candidate on a bicycle or Bodaboda and being followed by 8 highly trained commandos on a car worth 250M shillings? What is the net-worth of this individual we invest in all this? Okay a presidential candidate is an important person, why are they forbidden to be in the commandos car, I thought there is the best security? If a presidential candidate cannot dress himself, feed himself and under a poor shelter but approved by the Electoral Commission is the person with a leadership dream able to lead her/himself before he attempts to lead us? Aren’t such dramatic candidates an offense to the position and office of the presidency? How can such a person become tomorrow’s fountain of honor? EC please investigate such candidates through and after the election period?

3. I thought national leadership is a family issue, how then can you approve unmarried individuals for a responsibility of national leadership? There is no way people like us who believe in families can place someone at the top who has no wife or husband. To approve any single person for presidency is a direct attack to the idea of marriage and the concept of family. To argue that a single person models country leadership responsibility is to dismiss the actual model of responsibility which is family and to dismiss family is to do away with communities and the absence of communities kills a nation. Liberalism must not be exercised at the leadership level. Single people are great people and yes there are even married failures, the principle however must be maintained, a national leader must be a family person. We cannot afford a leader suffering from hysteria and running up and down on dates.

4. What is our constitution thinking to state we are a multiparty system but accommodate independents? For example, Kyagulanyi desired independence but he was politically pushed into a party setting and of course with all justifications, why do we then see these other independents being approved both on the presidency and other leadership levels? What are we running exactly, is it a multiparty system or a combination of multiparty and independence?

5. I understand the pandemic was a phenomenon to all of us but here is my question. Were all candidates subjected to a COVID-19 test if they were and tested negative, shouldn’t we run those tests every now and then throughout the election period for a track record? If this is not practical are the SOPs practical in a campaign season or something politicians use against each other and in the process gullible citizens die as casualties of these wars?

6. How scientific are these elections and how scientific will the voting be if the rallies have failed this much? MTN registers all my lines with my original national ID and so do my banking business, while we are to spend millions in printing ballot papers shouldn’t these scientific elections try digital and people vote from wherever they are? I mean is it a crime to attempt a new normal? We have a voters register, we have national IDs with NIN codes…let us try this thing, if it is too late for now, let us prepare for the next elections.
