LESSONS FROM PSALMS 51 (Part 2)

Lesson 2: OUR LOVE AND GOD’S LOVE

In Psalms 51, we have a guilty sinner in love with a God who is in love with him (sinner). I think this is a beautiful place to begin. God is in love with sinners and the question is whether the sinners like David are in love with him too.

David, in his repentance, referred to God’s love but with an adjective = STEADY. God’s love is a steadfast love but our love is a fickle-love. All that David did in his sinning was not because he had fallen out of love with God. He sinned but in love with God. That is who we are, our love is that fickle that we hurt those we are in love with.

Our love is sometimes hot, then cold. We sometimes praise our loved ones, then grumble. We are in love with them if they do right, and our love dies when they irritate us. Our love is not steady.

But look at how David presents God in this matter:

Have mercy on me o God according to thy steadfast love

A repentant sinner must be sure about the love of God. We must know that God’s love for us is steadfast love. God loves you and his love to you does not fluctuate with situations. I want you to believe that GOD’S LOVE TO YOU IS THE SAME WHEN YOU ARE A SAINT AND WHEN YOU ARE SINNER.

God is able to forgive us because his love is steady. It matters that we understand we worship an emotional God. God feels, God is sensitive and he even expresses his anger in form of his wrath.

The distinguishing factor between divine emotional attributes and human emotional stature is that God’s emotional build-up is STANDARD, STEADY and IMMOVABLE.

I want you to understand that when you sin and fall, God feels bad, not about YOU, but about your SIN. That is what makes his love a steadfast love and that should be our confidence to repent to him even the worst sins of our lives.

The Bible says in Lamentations 3:22-23 that:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness

I don’t know what you think God feels about you, but the truth is, God loves you and his love to you is steady. YOU CAN ONLY WALK OUT OF HIS LOVE BUT HIS LOVE CANNOT DESERT YOU.

The nation of Israel knew this when it is sung about this love in Psalm 136 {please read}
