THE NEXT GENERATION

In Deuteronomy 4:9-10, 6:7, and 11:19, God, again and again, emphasizes the importance of children knowing who He is.

This is not some kind of parenting but a preparation of the next generation. We live in a world where the school that your child goes to matters more than anything else.

The internet content, the TV shows, the movies, the parties, magazines, the media and friends, are the agents that mould our children.

God, in Deuteronomy, argues that we are positioned to produce another failed generation if we do not point our children to two facts:

  1. WHO GOD IS (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)
  2. OUR HISTORY WITH GOD (Deuteronomy 6:20-25)

It doesn’t matter how much your child is exposed to and how much he/she knows. Our children know way too much given that it is an information age. Our children might be bringing home good report cards, they might be well qualified in the
etiquettes of our culture, they might be managers of our homes and business etc.

We might be working hard to leave them a huge materialistic inheritance but if we do not pass on this God and tell them of what this God has done in the past, then we have not enabled the next generation.

Your children are an inheritance to the lord. Leave God another worshipper, another believer, and another follower. You have been a stubborn generation, please leave God with a better generation.

Every thief, prostitute, liar, rumour monger, every drunk, every corrupt, and all have parents and I can assure you, some of these traits have been directly and indirectly passed on from the former generation.

We also have good people and this good can be traced three generations back. Now I ask you,

What did your former generation pass on to you? How and who are you? What is it that you are passing on?

What do you tell your child as she goes to sleep and what do you tell her in the morning about life and God?

God bless you, my fellow parent, as we struggle to leave a generation better than ours.

  1. This message comes strategically and thus suitable. Today’s The Daily Monitor in Uganda(29th May,2018) has the leading headline that the BUTABIKA MENTAL/PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL’s patient list is being topped by University and High School students. The cause,as the chief of the hospital reports,is alcohol and drug addiction. This shows that what both homes and schools have failed somehow on the value of parenting! Surely, we need to pass on this GOD and HIS values to the young generation.
