Last time I briefly demonstrated that what we call TIME – is WHAT IS (was, is, to be). And the underlying truth was that there is nothing like “BEGINNING” and therefore nothing like “END” in the thing “we call” TIME. Why am I emphasizing that: “what we call“? Some time back I discussed THE PHILOSOPHY OF NAMING and my core argument was that we name things relatively and functionally.
So it is probable that we call “WHAT IS” (TIME) because of TWO REALITIES RESTRICTED TO OUR VENUE (Planet Earth):
1. BEGINNING
2. END
It is very essential that we confirm that, whatever BEGINS must END, and what never BEGUN will never END. So in our world what we call Time is due to the BEGINNING and the END we witness in our history, present, and of course the anticipated beginning we call the FUTURE (with its futuristic END in mind of course).
As a Christian, I believe there is a heaven (not a place but a being known as God/Creator), and I am persuaded in heaven (GOD) there is no END. Why? Because there was never a BEGINNING. Since God (read heaven) never begun, he cannot end. Secular scientists will tell you that they can’t trace origins of life on other planets like it is easy to do on Planet Earth. Why? Because Archeology, History, and Historiography is impossible where there isn’t man (in the image of God). I will simplify this in my next presentation.
Now why am I emphasizing this concept of BEGINNING and END? The answer is a simple one. It is because a BEGINNING and its END is the rationale of clocks, watches, calendars, seasons, periods and all other forms of quantification. My birth certificate records my BEGINNING on Earth, and the funeral services together with the Registrar of Deaths will inscribe in the books and on my grave my END, words like BORN 1-1-1986, DIED 1-1-2086. Birth implies BEGINNING, and Death implies END.
I would like to establish that every date on the calendar, be it a birth date, a country’s independence date, a marriage consummation and jubilee celebration, a company annual reporting, winter and summer, sowing and harvest, etc. are all implications of the fact that. This world has a BEGINNING and its default END. We the CREATIONISTS have a starting point of the journey of discovering what TIME is and why the calendars. In the Bible Genesis 1:3-5, 14-19 (LIGHT and DARKNESS: SUN and MOON).
Whether you believe in the Bible or not, the issue of time and its quantification in all our ancient and modern societies, stems and rotates around two factors:
1. SUN and MOON (light and darkness: the two nature realities)
2. BELIEF and MYTHOLOGY (what people believe as the power and cause behind such nature and its effect on daily life).
These two factors determine what I call the: CONCEPTUAL APPROACH OF TIME (which I will handle in my next series)
According to Nachum and Reingold in their book The Calenderical Calculations:
The course of the Sun and the Moon are the most evident forms of timekeeping, and the year and lunation were most commonly used in pre-modern societies worldwide as time units. Nevertheless, the Roman calendar contained very ancient remnants of a pre-Etruscan 10-month solar year. The first recorded calendars date to the Bronze Age, dependent on the development of writing in the Ancient Near East, the Egyptian and Sumerian calendars.
A larger number of calendar systems of the Ancient Near East becomes accessible in the Iron Age, based on the Babylonian calendar. This includes the calendar of the Persian Empire, which in turn gave rise to the Zoroastrian calendar as well as the Hebrew calendar.
As you can see, there is no TIME quantification without these two nature realities: SUN and MOON. It is upon these that we have our modern calendars. And it is upon the mythology behind these two that we have leap years that the Islamic calendar refutes about intercalation. I hope we all now see the genesis of current debates on why is the most authentic calendar and when we celebrate a date, what are we celebrating exactly. For instance, do Hebrew people celebrate both the 25th as the birth of Christ and the 1st January as the New Year’s Day? Answer: NO. what about conservative Hindus and ancient Sumerians, etc.
Another question might be, we all agree that we determine a SECOND by mini-seconds, a MINUTE by seconds, an HOUR by minutes, a DAY by hours, a WEEK by days, a MONTH by weeks and a YEAR by months. The definitive qualifications of a group of years will determine DECADES, MILLENNIUMS, AGES and CENTURIES. If this is so, let me ask if it is Night (darkness – by running mini-seconds, minutes, and hours) in one part of the world and it is Day (light – by running mini-seconds, minutes and hours) in another part of the same world is it still the same day, date, month and year in both places of the same world? If the answer is: YES, How and by what rationale? If it is NO, then we have a duty to justify the universal Saturday (Sabbath-day), Christmas day, New Year’s day, continue listing universal days.
I am sorry am going to leave it at this and in my next presentation, I will come down to the CONCEPTUAL APPROACH OF TIME in the two universal influential cultures then we will get to the nerve of every dust I have raised in this article.
