“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” 2 Cor 6:14
The key words in that text as far as our context is concerned are:
1-YOKED
2-UNBELIEVERS
YOKED
The Greek word translated as equally yoked in this text is HETEROZUGOUNTES this participle is found only here in the New Testament …No other example of this verb has yet been found, though the adjective from which it is apparently formed, heterozugos. This was a word Paul constructed from his observation of what was literally prohibited in the world of agriculture and farming. In the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint) it occurs in Le 19:19 (“You shall keep my statutes, you shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind; you shall not sow your field with two different kinds of seed; nor shall there come upon your garment of cloth made of two kinds of stuff”). another one is In De 22:10 we read: (“Thou shalt not plough with an ox and an ass together.” )
I want you to note the problem of taking literally these farming laws in our generation…look at the things the text warns us not to yoke together:
1-The Seed
2-The Garments
3-The Animals (ploughing)
Now let us face it, if all these were forbidden, there must have been some moral reasons for the prohibitions. However it must be underscored that whatever the moral lessons one is to draw from these prudential agricultural maxims, those lessons must be restricted to farming and agricultural lines and not into human love relationships.
We (and by “we” I mean those of us who have suspended our opinions, inspired and anointed by the Holy Spirit and at the same time educated in Biblical matters) cannot apply the use of heterozugountes in 2Cor 6:14 to forbid people from dating or even marrying whoever they want and fall in love with as long as they are of different sex. In fact the agriculture and farming law is against DIFFERENCE and advocating for SAMENESS…something that might compromise us Christians into justifying HOMOSEXUALITY (SAMENESS=Man and Man, Woman and Woman) at the expense of HETEROSEXUALITY (DIFFERENCE= Man and Woman)…Am just praying you understand me.
Now how do we then explain the use of Paul of this participle in this text? It justification can be explained by the preceding dative of UNBELIEVERS…
Coming up next is : WHO IS AN UN-BELIEVER?
GOD BLESS YOU
